RAF THURLEIGH

RAF Thurleigh

Lets Start with some history.

RAF Thurleigh was a former Royal Air Force Station located in Bedfordshire. Thurleigh was transferred to the United States Army Air Forces Eighth Air Force on 9th December 1942 and designated Station 111, and used for heavy bomber operations against Germany.

Thurleigh was built for RAF Bomber Command in 1940 by W & C French Ltd.

It was eventually modified to Air Ministry Class A Airfield specifications, with three converging runways, extended in 1942 to lengths of 6,000 (runway 06-24) and 4,200 feet (runways 18-36 and 12-30). Thurleigh was unique among bomber bases i having four T2 type metal hangers where most bases had only two.

We done this explore one evening very interesting site some parts still remain was a nice mooch around some great photos also. Does appear some of the site is owned and used by people. so much history to this place i could spend hours writing about it.
