TALGARTH ASYLUM

Mid Wales Hospital

Opened in 1903

Closed in 2000

Previous Names: Brecon & Radnor Joint Counties Lunatic Asylum, Mid Wales Counties Mental Hospital.

Now for some history.

The building was designed by Messrs Giles, Gough and Trollope of London followed the compact arrow plan and was built at a cost of £126,000. It was opened amid public ceremony on March 18th 1903, By the Rt Hon.

Like other contemporary institutions, the asylum was designed to be self-sufficient, and had its own private water, electricity, heating and sewerage systems as well as a considerable agricultural estate on which able-bodied patients worked to produce food for the hospital.

As well as residential wards, the hospital had a large recreation and dinning hall, kitchens, workshops "in which the patients were encouraged to spend there time profitably", a tailor, bakery, shoe-maker,and printing shops as well as 8 acres of market gardens.

This explore was amazing the building were amazing this place was our first ever big asylum and was well worth the drive. The place is in serious decay and falling apart but you can get a feeling of how sad the place was and also how unhappy some of the patients must have felt. The dinning hall was amazing there was even a bar The chapel was beautiful from the outside with a war time grave behind it. Some amazing photos to be taken. Lots to say about the place but will not go on any more. Please enjoy the photos.
